John Williamson

John Williamson (1826 - 1885) was active/lived in New York.  John Williamson is known for Landscape-water-shore, still life.

Born at Toll Cross, near Glasgow, Scotland, John Williamson emigrated to America as a child (1831). He spent most of his life in Brooklyn.

From 1844 to 1847, he attended the National Academy of Design antique class, the life class from 1850 to 1851 and the antique class from 1854 to 1855.

In the late 19th century, he became known for his landscapes of the Hudson River Valley and Connecticut.

Williamson began exhibiting at the National Academy in 1850, mostly landscapes but also a few genre paintings and also entered some still life. However, most of his paintings were landscapes, including along the Hudson River, Catskills, Adirondacks, White Mountains, Berkshires and into Connecticut.

He, like many of his colleagues, was trying to raise public perception about landscape painting.
