Karl Tratt (1903 - 1937) was active/lived in Germany.  Karl Tratt is known for Painting.

In 1926 Karl Tratt became one of the first four master students of Max Beckmann in the newly established master class at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. He studied and worked under his guidance until 1933. The double portrait shows the artist and his classmate Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, who entered Max Beckmann's master class in 1927. She was a close friend, together they went to exhibitions, discussed art and maintained an intensive correspondence. The artistic closeness to his teacher Beckmann is unmistakable.

While Tratt moves himself into the background on the left edge of the picture with a serious expression on his face and in a simple black suit with a collarless shirt, he stages Marie-Louise full of admiration in the center of the picture. Her fashionable light blue costume shines in front of the neutral light gray background and attracts the beholder's gaze.
