John Rubens Smith

John Rubens Smith (1775 - 1849) was active/lived in New York, Pennsylvania / England.  John Smith is known for Engraver, topographical landscape.

A master of drawing, topographer, portrait and miniature painter and art teacher, John Rubens Smith was born in London, where he studied with his father, John Raphael Smith, and exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy from 1796 to 1811.

By April of 1809, he was in Boston where he lived for several years before moving to Brooklyn, New York in 1814, and then to Philadelphia in the 1830s. By the 1940s, he was back in New York.

He had a lineage of artists as his father was a mezzotint engraver and his grandfather, Thomas Smith, was a landscape painter in Derby, England. The son of John Rubens Smith was John Rowson Smith, a panoramic and scenic artist.

In the America, Smith became a teacher with drawing academies in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Among his students were Emanuel Leutze, Eliab Metcalf, and Thomas Seir Cummings. He also wrote several books on how to draw.
