The following, submitted by Nina Killeen, is the obituary of the artist from the New Orleans paper, "Times Picayune / The States", Friday August 10, 1984:

Newton Reeve Howard, who designed and supervised the construction of Monkey Hill in Audubon Park during the Depression, died Wednesday evening at his home in New Orleans. He was 72.

Mr. Howard, a 1929 graduate of the Tulane University School of Architecture was in charge of the Monkey Hill Project for the Works Progress Administration, one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs designed to get Americans working during the 1930s. The hill was built to let children in flat New Orleans have an idea of what a real hill looks like....

Although Mr. Howard was an architect, he was better known as an artist, working in oils, acrylics and watercolors...He recently sold to the Smithsonian Institution seven paintings of the South Pacific which he did while he was in the Navy during World War II...Mr. How   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1490 characters.]  Artist bio
