Reginald Brill (1902-1974)

Born on 6 May 1902.  Studied at St. Martin's School of Art, London and won a scholarship at the Slade School in 1921.  Awarded the Prix de Rome in decorative painting in 1927 and then studied at The British School of Rome, Italy before returning to teach in London and was head at the Kingston School of Art 1934-1962.

Intoduced to Lavenham, Suffolk by one of his early patrons, Col. Gayer-Anderson, who with his brother, bequeathed their Tudor home, The Little Hall, as a hostel for art students, Brill and his wife became wardens.  Today the house if the headquarters of the Suffolk Preservation Society.  Brill had a studio in Lavenham Guildhall from where he traveled to Sudbury, Bury St. Edmund's and as far away as King's Lynn, Norfolk to draw livestock auctions, also drawing local scenes and views.  He died at Lavenham in 1974.
