Painter, architect, stage and set designer and translator of Latin American literature, Adolfo Luis Halty (aka Halty-Dube) was born in San Carlos, Uruguay.

He taught architecture, painting and aesthetics in the United States and  Uruguay at Columbia University, Ohio University,  Escuela Municipal de Arte Dramatico (Montevideo), Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. In 1962, he was Visiting Andrew Mellon Professor of Art at the Carnegie Institute.
 
Halty obtained a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics at the Académie de Poitiers, France, in 1935, and received his Master's in Architecture at the University of Montevideo in 1940.
 
He designed theatre settings for plays by Cervantes, Supervielle, and Wilde, and won an international competition for the setting of Ravel's Bolero in Montevideo.
