Anwar Jelal Shemza

Anwar Jelal Shemza (1928 - 1985) was active/lived in Asia.  Anwar Shemza is known for Modernist abstraction.

Anwar Jalal Shemza was born in Simla, India in 1928. He studied at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore, where he founded the Lahore Art Circle in 1952. Shemza sought inspiration in modernist abstraction, particularly the works of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Piet Mondrian. He painted this lot in 1955, the year before he left for London to study at the Slade School of Art. The painting embodies the blocks of color seen in Klee's works, the black outlines of Mondrian, and the whimsy of Kandinsky's compositions. Shemza's later works explored Roman letters, formal arrangements of circles, squares, and chessboard figures, as well as "pages" of lines inspired by Arabic and Persian calligraphy. He passed away in 1985.
