The artist Genelli created several series of illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy during his career. The first drawings emerged in the 1840s as independent compositions, still influenced by Joseph Anton Koch's decorations in the Casino Massimo in Rome. In 1846, Genelli received a commission for another series of drawings on the subject.
