Carl Eytel

Carl A. Eytel (1862 - 1925) was active/lived in California / Germany.  Carl Eytel is known for Western landscape and animal painting, illustration.

Carl Eytel was born into a wealthy family in Württemberg, Germany on Sept. 12, 1862. As a teenager Eytel studied forestry and spent one year of military service.  Through his studies in Stuttgart libraries, he learned of the Old West and became so obsessed with painting it that strong resistance from his family could not deter him from coming to America.

Immigrating to the U.S. in 1885, he worked on a cattle ranch in Kansas.  He returned to Germany for a brief period of art study before settling in southern California in 1898. While working as a ranch hand in the San Joaquin Valley, he began making painting forays into the Mojave and Colorado deserts.  He was often accompanied by artist Jimmie Swinnerton.

In 1906 he illustrated George W. James's Wonders of the Colorado Desert.  A shy and sensitive man, Eytel lived in poverty in a shack in Banning near Palm Springs until his death on Sept. 17, 1925.
