Karl Millner hiked his favorite subject, the high mountain landscape. On extensive tours through the Alps, he filled his sketchbooks in order to then compose his romantic paintings from these impressions in the studio. The present view, probably of Lago Maggiore, can be considered one of his main works. It combines everything that contemporaries valued in Millner's painting: the detailed depiction of rugged rock faces overgrown by roots, the reflecting surface of water, staffage depicted in lively colors and the warm light of the late afternoon, which is already announcing the sunset.It is precisely in this light that the influence of Carl Rottmann, who was a decisive role model for Millner from the beginning of his artistic career, becomes clear   ...  [Displaying 810 of 1477 characters.]  Artist bio
