He was the father of Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle, and younger brother of the artist Richard (Dickie) Doyle (1824-1883). His work typically included fairies or other fantastical themes. Afflicted by depression and alcoholism, in later life he was committed to a series of institutions.
