Chéri Cherin was born in 1955, he lives and works in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Originally named Joseph Kinkonda he invented the name Cherin by using the first letters of attributes he posesses; (C-créateur/creator, H-Hors série/exceptional, E-expressionniste/expressionist, R-remarquable/remarkable, IN-inégalable/matchless). Cherin studied art at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Kinshasa, during this time he created posters and murals for the local area, which illustrated everyday scenes and dealt directly with social and political issues. This passion for social and political education, invariably delivered with biting satirical humour, has informed Cherin's work throughout his career. Cherin is one of the key members of the Popular Art Movement of Kinshasa, whose aim is to create art that a wide audience of Congolese people can relate to.
