Doreen Gadsby has found light in the dark, writes Steve Meacham.

At 84, Doreen Gadsby - mother to four children, widow to four husbands - needs no alarm to rise each day at 4am. She is at her easel a few minutes later, making best use of what, for her, is the best light of the day.

The rest of us might struggle in the pre-dawn gloom. But Gadsby is afflicted with one of the worst curses possible for an artist. Sarcoidosis is a rare immune disease that attacks a victim's lungs and eyes. In Gadsby's case, the brighter the sunlight, the less she can see.
