Edwin Gustave Benkman was born in Germany on March 12, 1885. Benkman came to California with his parents in 1886 and settled in San Francisco.

A sculptor during his early life, he later played bass fiddle for the Oakland Symphony for 50 years. He died in San Mateo, CA on May 21, 1976.
