John Niemeyer

John Henry Niemeyer (1839 - 1932) was active/lived in Connecticut, New York / Germany.  John Niemeyer is known for Portrait, figure and landscape painting.

Although born in Germany, John H. Niemeyer grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, taught in New York City, and then studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts* in Paris with Jean Leon Gerome and others. 

When he returned to the United States, he became the first Professor of Drawing at the newly founded Yale School of the Fine Arts, a job he held from 1871 to 1908.  He received an Honorary M.A. from Yale in 1874, and in 1930, the School held a retrospective exhibition of his work. 

For over thirty years, he regularly exhibited at the National Academy of Design* and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art*s.  The Yale University Art Gallery owns eight portraits by Niemeyer.  

An original member of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club*, John H. Niemeyer exhibited his paintings form 1900 to 1915 in nearly every annual show, contributing European scenes and portraits.
