Karl Amiard Oberteuffer

Karl Amiard Oberteuffer (1908 - 1958) was active/lived in Massachusetts.  Karl Oberteuffer is known for Townscape, marine, mural painting, etching.

The son of French artist Henriette Amiard and American painter George Oberteuffer, Karl Oberteuffer was born in Le Croisic, France and attended elementary school in Paris.  At the age of ten, he moved with his family to the United States, settling in Chicago.  In 1925, Oberteuffer enrolled at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago.  While a student there, he received an honorable mention in 1927 and the S. S. Peabody Prize in 1928.  

Following his graduation in 1928, Oberteuffer became an art instructor and taught at the Memphis Academy of Art in Tennessee during the 1930s, and then at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston during the 1940s and 1950s.  A beneficiary of New Deal arts initiatives, he produced post office murals in MacKenzie, Tennessee in 1938 and in Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1943.  Solo exhibitions soon followed at prestigious venues, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery  of Art (1941); Whitney Museum   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1741 characters.]  Artist bio
