Sergei Tkachev was born in the Chugunovka, Bryansk region, in 1922.  He completed his studies at the Surikov Institute in Moscow and graduated in 1952 from the studio of Sergei Gerasimov.  Since the early 1950s, Sergei and his bother Aleksei have worked together, often on the same canvas, sharing studios in Moscow and in the country.

For 60 years, the brothers chronicled one of history's most dramatic periods through the eyes of Russian villagers.  Both have earned the title, "People's Artist of the USSR," and both have been awarded the USSR State Prize and the Repin Prize of the Russian Federation.  The creativity of the Tkachev brothers revolves around country life because this area is where they took their first steps together and shared their interpretations of the world about them.
