As is noted in an article in the Louisville Courier-Journal, Vaughn Flannery studied art at the Chicago Art Institute and the University of Illinois, then enlisted in the US Army Camouflage Corps during World War I. He is described in the article as a native of Kentucky who “is practically unknown in Louisville, but is well-known in the art world.”

After the war, he became a graphic designer, and eventually co-owned a large advertising agency. “In 1940 he quit advertising, sold his interest in the firm and established himself as a painter,” the article states.“He is recognized for his ‘experiments in diagrammatic painting’.”
