The following was submitted by the artist's niece, Denise Matthews:

Yannis Maltezos, born in 1913, was a founder of the Abstract Expressionism movement in Greece. He began painting at the age of 6 in Smyrna, Turkey where he was born. When the Turkish government expelled the Greek population at the end of World War I, his family fled to Crete and later to Athens. Maltezos studied at the University of Athens School of Art. He worked as a set designer for the National Greek Theater prior to WWII. At the end of WWII, he began to experiment with an abstract expressionist style. His drip technique appeared free-form but culminated in subtle, central motifs.

Maltezos continually evolved as an artist, he innovated his own styles and refused to repeat himself. His paintings reveal the originality of vision he pursued until his death in Paris in 1987.
