Nathaniel Sichel

Nathaniel Sichel (1843 - 1907) was active/lived in Germany.  Nathaniel Sichel is known for Historical scenes, portrait and figure painting (Orientalist).

Nathaniel (Nathaneal, Nathaneel) Sichel was born in Mainz (Mentz, Mayence), Germany on January 8,1843 and died on April 12, 1907 in Berlin.  He studied with the esteemed art teacher Julius Schrader at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich from 1859 - 1862.  Sichel won the prestigious Italian prize and accompanying traveling scholarship in 1864, for a painting entitled Joseph Explains the Dreams of the Pharaoh, establishing him in his primacy as an Orientalist.

Sichel then went to Paris, where he painted a portrait of the Countess of Ernaudes that was exhibited in the Salon of 1865, and which prefigures his later development in portraiture.

It is thought that through his traveling scholarship, the artist viewed bas-reliefs in tombs of ancient Egyptian monarchs, near the temples of Thebes, through which resonated a prototype for the heroine of his seminal works  - the beautiful olive skinned woman with glowing eyes.
