A German painter, he was born on  August 30, 1655 or 57, in Frankfort, Germany.

He belonged to a family of painters: his brother was Johann Melchior Roos [Dec. 27, 1663 - 1731], his father Johann Heinrich Roos [Oct.27, 1631 - Oct. 3, 1685], his uncle Theodor Roos [Sept. 1638 - June 7, 1687], his son Cajetan Roos [1690-1770], and his grandson Joseph Roos [Oct. 9, 1726 - Aug. 25, 1805].

Phillip Peter Roos went to Italy in 1677, on a scholarship from the Landgrave of Hesse.  In Rome he studied under Giacinto Brandi, whose daughter Maria Isabella he married in 1681, after converting to the Catholic faith.  In c.1684, he bought a house near Tivoli, hence his nickname Rosa da Tivoli.  From 1691 he seems to have lived mainly in Rome.

Roos was a member of the Schildersbent, which gave him the nickname Mercurius because of the speed in which he painted.  He painted almost exclusive   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1297 characters.]  Artist bio
