Barbara Jones-Hogu (American, b. 1938)

Painter, printmaker, filmmaker and educator Barbara Jones-Hogu was one of the founding members of AfriCobra*, who came together in 1968 on the South Side of Chicago to create and define a new black aesthetic. Jones-Hogu became known for her graphic works and prints, which were especially effective in conveying political messages with powerful visual elements.

Jones-Hogu was born in Chicago and received a BA from Howard University in 1959, a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago* in 1964, and a Master's Degree with a concentration in printmaking from the Illinois Institute of Design* at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1970.
