Bruce Alanson McGaw (born 1935) has been a force in the San Francisco and West Coast art scene since the 1950s. He was exhibited in the seminal show held at the Oakland Museum of Art in 1957 that marked the first time the post-war San Francisco modernists were referred to as the Bay Area Figurative Movement. He studied in the 1950's at the California College of the Arts with Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, David Park, etc. and is professor emeritus of the San Francisco Art Institute.

McGaw was born in Berkeley, California.

In 1955, at age 18, McGaw attended classes at California College of Arts and Crafts (now the California College of the Arts) in Oakland, and was in the institution’s first class taught by Richard Diebenkorn after Diebenkorn's return to California from the East Coast. He graduated in 1957 with a BFA degree.

Bruce Alanson McGaw (born 1935) has been a force in the San Francisco and West Coast art scene since the 1950s. He was exhibited in the seminal show held at the Oakland Museum of Art in 1957 that marked the first time the post-war San Francisco modernists were referred to as the Bay Area Figurative Movement. He studied in the 1950's at the California College of the Arts with Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, David Park, etc. and is professor emeritus of the San Francisco Art Institute.

McGaw’s paintings during the mid-1950s reflect an interest in later Abstract Expressionist styles, with lush colors and loose, spirited forms. By 1957, McGaw had moved more deeply into representational work and the handling of the human figure that would come to drive his work for the next half-century.

He was one of the early Bay Area post-war artists who embraced David Park's new direction adding "objects" back into abstract (non-objective) art.?

Bruce McGaw [1935-] was born in Berkeley, California and received art training and a degree at the California College of Arts and Crafts where Richard Diebenkorn was his teacher and acted as his mentor. He was one of the artists to exhibit in the contemporary Bay Area Figurative Painting show at the Oakland Art Museum in 1957.

His figurative paintings showed angular forms, dissonant colors and bold outlines similar to that of German expressionism. He taught at the San Francisco Art Institute and was a director in 1988.
