Charles Jones Way (AKA: C.J. Way) was an artist his whole adult life, and he painted until the day he died (1). He resided in Canada for a total of only 17 of his 83 years; yet, he was considered a prominent Canadian painter, draftsman, educator and leader in the Canadian art community for half a century. For over 50 years he exhibited with Canada's most prestigious art organizations; he helped formulate art education policies and practices in an official advisory capacity for the province of Quebec; and his works are in over a dozen of Canada's most important museums.

Way was born in Dartmouth, Devon, England and died in Lausanne, Switzerland where he had resided almost continuously since 1874. He emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1858 and lived there until 1873, when he returned briefly to Devon before leaving for Lausanne.
