Curtis Rosser

Curtis Rosser (1927 - 2005) was active/lived in Massachusetts.  Curtis Rosser is known for Street scene, coastal view, genre.

Curtis Rosser's paintings exhibit a rare mastery of technical skill.  His adaptation of Impressionism employs brushwork which is fluid and "painterly," yet his art never loses the crispness and precision of a master draftsman.  Rosser's true gift, however, lies not in his mastery of technique, but in his poetry of visual presentation.  We have the feeling in viewing his work, that it is at once reassuringly familiar and hauntingly beautiful.  A street scene; a child at play on the beach; a well tended garden: all begin with the ordinary and are transformed into something far more rare and magical.

A native Texan, Rosser was born in 1927. He studied at the San Antonio Art Institute, and subsequently at DePauw University.  He studied privately in Italy, and finally at the Graduate Degree School of Medical Illustration at The Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Curtis Rosser's paintings exhibit a rare mastery of technical skill.  His adaptation of Impressionism employs brushwork which is fluid and "painterly," yet his art never loses the crispness and precision of a master draftsman.  Rosser's true gift, however, lies not in his mastery of technique, but in his poetry of visual presentation.  We have the feeling in viewing his work, that it is at once reassuringly familiar and hauntingly beautiful.  A street scene; a child at play on the beach; a well tended garden: all begin with the ordinary and are transformed into something far more rare and magical.

A native Texan, Rosser was born in 1927. He studied at the San Antonio Art Institute, and subsequently at DePauw University.  He studied privately in Italy, and finally at the Graduate Degree School of Medical Illustration at The Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Subsequently, he formed a successful graphics business; and at other stages in his life was in senior executive positions in the financial and insurance industries.  He remained a gifted painter, and after an early retirement re-established with astonishing rapidity a flourishing career as a professional artist.  Rosser has won well over 50 major awards in open juried regional shows. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including those of the Fogg Museum at Harvard University and the Cape Museum of Fine Art.  He was featured in a major article in the April, 1993 issue of American Artist Magazine.
