Mr. Stokes has had a diversified career. When he was a young man, a long time ago, in Ohio, he decided on a banking career. He worked his way up from messenger to teller, then decided to quit and take a fling at painting. He got into a rowboat with a friend and went down the Ohio River sketching. When winter came, he went to Florida and made his living as a painter of landscapes. Once he almost made a fortune. Some dealers up North told him to send all the Florida landscapes he could paint. He painted feverishly for a while and finally shipped several pictures. Then the Florida boom collapsed, and Florida landscapes have been unpopular ever since.

The artist dug graves for a while. Then he teamed up with an engineer to develop a smash-proof steam radiator valve handle to replace the wooden kind that breaks every season or so. When the two took their handle to a manufacturer, he said the item was too good. It would never break – and the company would lose $1,000, 000 in replacement sales every year.  Mr. Stokes then invented a smoke consumer but ran into the same disappointment with it.

Baltimore is more receptive to inventors, Mr. Stokes says. He is already developing another invention – color harmony for paintings worked out in proportion to musical harmony.
