His style as a painter varies both in forms and techniques. His travels in Europe reflects his impressionistic tendencies. His early paintings toy with pointillism and fauvism. His later work is more vague in form and darker in mood. He painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and scenes from his imagination. Hewitt was a prolific artist, finishing several hundred canvasses in his life time. Most of his work resides in private collections. In his last years, he made Salisbury, Connecticut his home and many of his paintings of the hills there express his love of New England.
