An important Canadian painter and draftsman, George Theodore Berthon was born in Vienna, Austria to French parents and died in Toronto, Ontario where he had lived since the early 1840s. Shortly after his birth his family returned to their home in Paris where Berthon grew up. In 1827 he moved to London, England. Sometime after 1836 and before 1845 he immigrated to Toronto, Canada where he lived the rest of his life. Berthon's work is discussed in most Canadian art history books and his portraits hang in many distinguished Canadian public and private collections. (2)(3)
