On 21st May, Boningtons Auctioneers will offer a work by the Victorian artist George Washington Brownlow, an occasion that will have additional significance as the artist did in fact live and work in Essex.

Brownlow’s composition, All But Lost, is a quintessential work of high Victorian genre. The oil on canvas shows a group of children with a dog by the sea, the eldest preparing to retrieve a toy boat that has gone adrift.

George Washington Brownlow specialized in figurative subjects, exhibiting at the Royal Academy (1860-75), the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists. The present painting (pictured) is a smaller version of a larger work exhibited by the artist at Suffolk Street, the R.S.B.A venue, in 1866 (sold at Christie’s, November 2005); Brownlow’s other submission that year, Findon fishermen mending their nets, is perhaps indicative that All But Lost also depicts Findon, a historic village on the West Sussex coast
