Jack Wisby

Jack Wisby was a California artist known for his landscape paintings of Northern California. His detailed painting style reflects his early experience as an engraver.

Wisby was born in London, England in 1870, and by 1897 had relocated to San Francisco, California. There he met and married Mary Anne Fossey and the couple stayed in San Francisco. While in the city, he worked for Shreves (jewelry store) for a few years as an engraver.

He had no formal training in art but often took sketching trips to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, and created oil paintings from his sketches. His landscape paintings often included a water reflection and were created using a soft brush stroke.

In 1906, following the great San Francisco earthquake and fire, the Wisbys relocated to Marin County. They lived in the town of Inverness, California until 1912, when he built a studio in nearby Bolinas.
