He was known for his sanguine pencil drawings, which were likely influenced by Wille and his friendship with Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Schmutzer's drawings were more focused on expression studies rather than real portraits, and were executed in a disciplined drawing technique reminiscent of copperplate engraving. He had previously been trained as a copperplate engraver in Vienna
