Jan Weenix

Jan Weenix (1640 - 1719) was active/lived in Netherlands.  Jan Weenix is known for Still life, figure, landscape painting.

Jan Weenix (1640/41-1719) was the son of Jan Baptist Weenix, a famous painter of the Dutch Golden Age whose Italian landscapes were very popular.  Weenix apprenticed with his father and initially also created depictions of the Roman Campagna and harbor motifs with figural scenes.  Eventually, however, he devoted himself to painting hunting still lifes.  A popular motif was dead game, often with hunters and dogs in front of a scenic background.

In 1697 Weenix created a portrait of Czar Peter the Great.  In addition, he received an order from a Spanish merchant for five large-scale oil paintings of a house in Amsterdam.  For ten years the artist worked for Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine and created for the latter's Schloss Bensberg a total of twelve paintings.  Weenix worked in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Germany.
