Johan Waldemar de Rehling Quistgaard was born in Orsholtgaard, Denmark, on February 9, 1877.  After receiving his bachelor's degree from the Royal College of Agriculture in Copenhagen in 1899, he began painting.  According to a letter from Mr. Quistgaard to Smithsonian Institute Secretary Alexander Wetmore (Secretary from 1944-1952), Quistgaard emigrated to the United States in 1901 and first exhibited at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.  Quistgaard writes that he "gave one man exhibition (of) miniatures at Arthur Tooth and Sons, New York, during spring 1906" and was elected to the French Miniature Society later that year.  The following year his works were shown "by special invitation at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London—a most unusual honor."  In 1909 he was commissioned by the Royal Family of Denmark to portray, among othe   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 2966 characters.]  Artist bio
