John Cosby, born in 1955 in Hollywood, operates in both worlds of illustrations and fine art.  He paints brushy land and seascapes, city scenes and interiors, many with broadly suggested figures.  Primarily a California artist, living in Laguna Beach, Cosby has painted in a variety of locations from New York City and northern New Mexico to Hawaii, Europe and Asia.

Fifth Avenue Dogs, a 24 x 26 oil painting based on a photograph of New York City, contrasts a middle-ground hot dog cart and umbrella and a few passersby and cars with the trees lining the Avenue just outside Central Park.

Day at the Beach, oil, 12 x 24, depicts three foreground sunbathers, with their gear and umbrella, and backs to the viewer, facing the ocean waves rolling toward shore.

John Cosby, born in 1955 in Hollywood, operates in both worlds of illustrations and fine art.  He paints brushy land and seascapes, city scenes and interiors, many with broadly suggested figures.  Primarily a California artist, living in Laguna Beach, Cosby has painted in a variety of locations from New York City and northern New Mexico to Hawaii, Europe and Asia.

As a child, Cosby's interest in art was supported by his grandmother, who was also an artist.  He later worked seven years as a commercial artist.  Before that, he was an advance man for Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald Ford from 1972 to 1976, leaving when he was twenty-two year old. During this time, he also drew cartoons for the Chesapeake Boatman newspaper in Washington, D.C.

He went to California in 1980.

An organizer as well as an artist, Cosby later founded the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, of which he also was President.  He is a member of California Art Club and Oil Painters of America.

A plein-air painter based in southern California, John Cosby uses strong, bold brushstrokes to depict landscapes, figures and marine scenes from the many locations he has studios including Laguna Beach, Hawaii, and Taos, New Mexico.

A special interest is depicting people in motion such as crossing the street or eating in a cafe.  He became the subject of a PBS documentary in 2000 that shows him painting on location in San Francisco.

A special exhibition of his work was held in Spring, 1999 at the Know Gallery in Denver, Colorado, and in 1966, he became one of the founders of the Laguna Plein-Air Painters Association.  He is also the founder of the Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational competition, an event that attracts landscape painters from all over the country.

John Cosby, was born in 1955 in Hollywood, California.  He began to paint as a child under the tutelage of his grandmother, an oil painter, and became a Plein-Air painter.

Recently Cosby has averaged two one-person shows each year, in addition to frequent participation in juried group shows.  He has been widely exhibited in the last decade in California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, Florida, New York, and Tokyo, Japan.

His work has been featured in recent articles in American Artist, and Southwest Art magazines and has been a featured artist in several group shows at Tree's Place including "On Location, Coast to Coast: Small Works by Nine Americans" (2001), "Painting the City" (2002), "California Plein Air Painters" (2003), and "Cafes, Bars and Other Diversions" (2004).

Presently residing and maintaining his studio in Laguna Beach, California, he is one of the founding board members of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and its current President.  He is also an Artist member of the California Art Club, and of the Oil Painters of America.
