Kathleen Eva Houlahan

Kathleen Eva Houlahan (1884 - 1964) was active/lived in Washington, California / Canada.  Kathleen Houlahan is known for Mountain landscape, portrait, Indian.

Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Kathleeen Houlahan became a painter of western subjects including mountain landscapes, Indians whom she painted in the Southwest in the 1920s, and portraits including Ezra Meekers.

She lived as a child in Pasadena, California from the age of three. In 1901, she moved to Seattle and attended the University of Washington from 1902 to 1907. For her landscape paintings she often went by pack horse into the Cascade range and also visited other sites including the San Juan Islands, the Hood Canal, and the Neah Reservations.

Houlahan never married and was most active as an artist between 1914 and 1938. She exhibited widely including the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition, the National Arts Club, the Salons of America, and the Society of Independent Artists.

In 1968, the Frye Museum in Seattle held a retrospective of her work.

Born in Winnepeg, Canada on Jan. 31, 1884. Houlahan moved to Pasadena in 1887 and lived there until 1901 when she enrolled at the University of Washington. She later studied in NYC with Henri, Hawthorne, and Miller. While based in Seattle she made trips to California to exhibit and sketch. She did little painting after 1938 due to ill health. A spinster, she died in Seattle on Feb. 1, 1964. Exh: Seattle FA Society, 1914; PPIE, 1915; San Francisco Art Association, 1916; Western Painters, 1922; Seattle Museum, 1933-35; Frye Museum, 1968 (solo).
