Facts about Lili Laurin

Biography from Highlands Art Gallery

Lili works in oils and pastels in an impressionist and painterly, yet refined, realist style.  Lili has received national recognition for her work including an Honorable Mention in North Light's Cover Contest.  Her work and painting techniques have been published in International Artists Magazine, as well as in the art instruction series, 100 Ways to Paint Landscapes.  Lili's work can be seen at the Salon International 2007 exhibition at the Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Arts in San Antonio, TX.

Lili Anne Laurin has years of experience in painting landscapes and is also an
accomplished portrait artist.  Born in Montreal, Canada, Lili began studying watercolor in her teens under well-known Montreal-area artist and teacher, Helmut Gerth.  Lili's subsequent five years of rigorous classical training under Gerth included drawing and painting only from life and en plein air, and several ten-day painting excursions to Kennebunkport, Maine.  Lili was a member of the Montreal Arts Club and participated in several juried shows.  She continued to explore other mediums, including oils, acrylic and printmaking, while studying for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University in Montreal.

Life's challenges and the demands of raising a family took Lili away from art as a full-time occupation and sent her into the business world, which included working in the performing arts industry as a public relations representative for l'Opera de Montreal, traveling extensively to Europe and the Far East, and living in Germany.  Through these years, Lili continued to paint and hone her artistic skills, and her passion for art eventually triumphed when she returned to painting on a full-time basis in 1998.

Lili and her family moved from Montreal to Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where she joined the Somerset Art Association and developed friendships with other artists with whom she continues to paint and exhibit.  In 2001, Lili collaborated with several New Jersey artists in establishing Studio Seven Art Gallery, an artists' cooperative and gallery in Bernardsville, New Jersey.  She has traveled extensively on painting trips to Europe and Canada and within the United States.  A trip to Normandy and the French countryside became the inspiration for a series of landscape paintings Lili exhibited in a group show in May 2000 at Louisa Melrose Gallery in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Over the years, Lili has studied various techniques and mediums with a number of accomplished artists, including pastelist, Christina Debarry, portrait artist, Paul McCormack, impressionist landscape painter, Lee W. Hughes, and world-renowned portrait artist, Everett Raymond Kinstler.  Currently, Lili is studying figure painting under the tutelage of Joseph Peller at the Art Students League in New York City.  Although Lili enjoys painting a variety of subjects, she devotes most of her time to painting landscapes en plein air and portraits in her studio in New Jersey.
