In preparing manuscript records for our catalog . . . I thought I'd share the data I'd come up with while cataloging a letter he [Merriam] had written to John Ruskin. Feel free to use all, none, or part of the data, as you see fit. Note that I was not able to examine Mifflin's paintings.

Lloyd Mifflin was born September 15, 1846, into an affluent family in
Columbia, Pennsylvania. His father, John Houston Mifflin, had trained as a portrait painter and studied in Europe, but gave up painting to tend to his ailing wife.

In his youth, Lloyd developed a love of painting through his father, and
came to revere the Pennsylvania countryside near his home. He received his
initial training in art from his father, and later studied with Thomas
Moran in 1869-1870, where he developed an appreciation for the landscapes
of both Moran and J.M.W. Turner.

of both Moran and J.M.W. Turner.

Between January 1872 and September 1873 Lloyd Mifflin made the Grand Tour
of Europe. He was inspired by galleries and locations, particularly in
Dusseldorf, where he studied under Herman Herzog. He developed a respect
for the paintings of Rembrandt that influenced his approach to painting light.

After returning home, he painted the Susquehanna River countryside of
eastern Pennsylvania. It may fairly be said that while Mifflin's canvases
are interesting, he never fulfilled his early promise. Financially
independent, he was un fazed by his lack of commercial success and continued to paint for love of art. He also tried sculpture and engraving.

In the 1890s, frail health compelled him to give up the primarily outdoor
art of landscape painting in favor of the indoor art of writing poetry; he
would go on to publish fourteen books of verse, including over 500 sonnets,
earning him the honorific "America's sonneteer." Mifflin never married, and
continued to write verse and paint occasionally until his death in 1921.
