Margaret Jordan Patterson (1867/77 - 1950) was active/lived in Massachusetts.  Margaret Patterson is known for Landscape and still life painting, woodblock prints.

 Born in Soerabaija, Java, Margaret Patterson is remembered primarily for her wood blocks, most now lost or destroyed.  She also did highly colorful paintings, called a "celebration on canvas", and she worked in both watercolor and oil.

Patterson attended school in Boston and taught public school art in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Southbridge, Massachusetts.  She taught in the Boston Public Schools for almost twenty years, and in 1915 became the Director of the Art Department at the Dana hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts, a position she held for thirty-five years. During her summers, she frequently traveled to Cape Cod.

At the Pratt Institute, Arthur Wesley Dow was a major influence on her work.  She also studied in Boston with Charles Woodbury, Hermann Dudley Murphy, and Charles Pepper.  From 1900 to 1929, she made yearly trips to Europe to sketch for her prints, which were much influenced by Japanese art.  For her color wood block printi   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 4812 characters.]  Artist bio

Born in Soerabaija, Java, Margaret Patterson is remembered primarily for her wood blocks, most now lost or destroyed.  She also did highly colorful paintings, called a "celebration on canvas", and she worked in both watercolor and oil.

Margaret Jordan Patterson was born in 1867 aboard her father's ship off the coast of Java.  She studied with Arthur Wesley Dow and Charles Woodbury with whom she traveled to Europe at the turn of the century.  She later became his teaching assistant and also had her own summer school in Monhegan, Maine.  She gained prominence in color woodblock printing which she learned from Ethel Mars in Paris.  She exhibited widely and sold her prints through Doll and Richards and Goodspeed's in Boston.  She taught art at Dana Hall and also took students to Italy for private summer instruction.

Patterson died in 1950.

Born in Soerabaija (Surabaja), Java, Miss Patterson worked during her lifetime as a painter, printmaker, illustrator, and art teacher in Boston and Wellesley. She studied art formally at The Pratt Institute, New York under Arthur Dow and with Herman Dudley Murphy and Charles Herbert Woodbury in Boston.

By 1909 she was assistant director of drawing for Boston public schools and was appointed director by 1912. She traveled to Spain in summer of 1910. Studied with Ciaudio Castelucho in Italy by 1912, and later with him in Paris. Also she studied with Augalada. Miss Patterson first studied wood-block printing with Ethel Mars in Paris and was given her first one-person exhibition, arranged my Miss Mars, at Galerie Levesque in 1913.

She exhibited at Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. She settled in Boston and by the fall of 1920 had been appointed head of art department in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She exhibited in Paris in 1922; traveled to Italy twice between 1922 and 1924. She served as secretary of the art society, The Group, during the 1920s. She continued to teach until early in the 1940s, spending her summers teaching and painting at her studio, Horn's Hill, on Monhegan Island, Maine. Miss Patterson died in Boston on February 17th, 1950.

Her works are preserved in a number of national and international museums as well as in private collections.
