Otto Ritter von Thoren

Otto Ritter von Thoren (1828 - 1889) was active/lived in France, Austria.  Otto Thoren is known for Animals in landscape and rural scene painting.

Karl Kasimir Otto Ritter von Thoren, aka Otto von Thoren was born on July 21, 1828 in Vienna, and died on July 15, 1889 in Paris. He was an Austrian animal painter.

Otto von Thoren was the son of Francis-Casimir de Thoron and Constance-Marie-Françoise Lochmann.

A military officer in 1846, he participated in the Austrian Revolution of 1848; he was captain of cuirassiers and then moved away for a time to Venice. In 1857, he turned completely to painting and studied for several years in Brussels and Paris .

In the mid-1860s, he was called to Vienna to paint the portrait of Franz Joseph I of Austria . After painting The Death of Gustave-Adolphe, he turned to animal painting, in particular grazing cattle, where he distinguished himself by an energetic line and delicate observation of nature.

Otto von Thoren's paintings are often found in Austrian museums such as the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (Museum of Military History) in Vienna.
