Susan Blackwood is a painter whose work is juried into National Museum Shows including the CM Russell Museum Auction/Exhibition and the Salon International Exhibitions - 3 of her paintings have been awarded the Jury's top 50.  She has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine - ("Artist to Watch") and International Artist Magazine-("Master Painters of the World").  She is a member of Oil Painters of America and a founding member of Montana Painters Alliance.

Born in Chicago, Susan Blackwood comes from six generations of artists, and her lineage is traced back to the parents of Rembrandt.  She grew up surrounded by art. Her father was her first instructor and quickly put a small easel next to his in his studio. Susan Blackwood is a painter whose work is juried into National Museum Shows including the CM Russell Museum Auction/Exhibition and the Salon International Exhibitions - 3 of her paintings have been awarded the Jury's top 50.  She has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine - ("Artist to Watch") and International Artist Magazine-("Master Painters of the World").  She is a member of Oil Painters of America and a founding member of Montana Painters Alliance.

Born in Chicago, Susan Blackwood comes from six generations of artists, and her lineage is traced back to the parents of Rembrandt.  She grew up surrounded by art. Her father was her first instructor and quickly put a small easel next to his in his studio. Growing up, Blackwood always knew that she was an artist.  Family outings often included a trip to the Art Institute Museum or plein air painting at a lake.  Her sister is artist Karen Vance and her husband is artist Howard Friedland.  Susan and Howard met in Taos at a paintout, and they were married in 1998. 

As for her formal education, she received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University and later studied with Irving Shapiro at the American Academy of Art, Chicago, IL.  She has also studied with many of the current great artists such as: Richard Schmid, Morgan Weistling, Carolyn Anderson, Matt Smith, Kathryn Stats, Zhiwei Tu and Tony Couch.

As an instructor, she has taught painting and drawing in the United States, the Bahamas, France, England, Italy, and the Middle East.  She spent three years in Pakistan where she maintained and active studio and had three solo exhibitions. Her works are in the collections of: American Express; the French Consulate of Lahore, Pakistan; Anheuser Bush; and the Sonoran Desert Museum.

Her work has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine, U.S. Art Magazine, International Artist Magazine and Wildlife Art News.  Her publishers include the National Audubon Society, The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Alliance, Big Brothers Association, National Riflemen's Association, North Light Publishers - (Best of Flower Painting by Katherine Kipp) and The Medici Society Ltd. of London, England.  In 1999 Watercolor Magazine featured an article about Blackwood's paintings from Venice.

In 2003, after 32 years as a watercolorist, Susan switched to oil painting.  She now paints exclusively in oils.
