Vernon B Smith

Vernon B. Smith (1894 - 1969) was active/lived in Massachusetts.  Vernon Smith is known for Abstract figurative painting, bas-relief wood carving.

Vernon Smith was born in 1894 in Cortland, NY (upper state) and, by 1918, he had gone to study at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts in Paris.  Smith also came to Cape Cod where he studied with Charles Hawthorne, the founder of the Provincetown School of Art, eventually settling in the town of Orleans where he became a teacher in the Orleans public school system.

During the Depression years of 1934-1937, he was Regional Director of the WPA and painted in Alaska that last year when his work took him there.  He apparently established ties with the Boston area quite early because he exhibited at the Walker Gallery, Boston with a one-man show in 1934 and at the Institute of Modern Art, Boston, in 1939.

He was a founder and President of the Cape Cod Art Association and a member of the Provincetown Art Association and Eastern Art Association, among others.
