Burt Hasen, a New York painter who drew inspiration from his experience working with maps as a military technician during World War II, died on Friday in Manhattan.  He was 85 and lived in Lower Manhattan.

He died after being ill for several months, said his wife, Mary Hasen.

Born in New York City, Mr. Hasen studied at the Art Students League, at the school of the painter Hans Hofmann and, for two years after the war, in Paris on the G.I. Bill.

During the war he served in the Air Force in the Pacific, where his duties involved close study of aerial maps, an activity that lastingly influenced his work.  His densely worked canvases often had an overhead perspective, whether they suggested an aerial view of a fantasy terrain or a bomb target, some molecular life-form under a microscope or a mass of hieroglyphs on a stretched animal skin.  Toward the end of his life, ma   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1911 characters.]  Artist bio
