The following has been submitted in May of 2006 by Eric Sublett, son of the artist.


Carl Sublett worked as a machinist, turning propeller shafts at United Aircraft in Hartford, Connecticut until WWII broke out, and then he went to Italy with the U.S. Army from 1943 until the war ended.  After the war he stayed there to take art history at the American Academy in Florence.  He married Helen Crawford Davis who also worked at the airplane factory August 22, 1942.

After the war he began working in industrial design and then as staff artist at the Bristol Virginia, Tennessee Herald-Courier and later the Bristol Virginia-Tennessean

He went to Knoxville, TN in 1954 to work for the Charles S. Kane Advertising Co. and then got a teaching position in the department of art at the University of Tennessee under C. Kermit Ewing.  Sublett became a full professor of art in 1966 and retired in 1982 to pursue his painting and exhibiting.   ...  [Displaying 996 of 1777 characters.]  Artist bio

Biography from Case Auctions

Carl Sublett was an American artist who studied Art History at the American Academy in Florence, Italy, after serving in World War II. He eventually became a Professor of Fine Art at the University of Tennessee and was a founding member of the art group, The Knoxville Seven, which produced some of the first abstract expressionist art in Tennessee. In 1982, he retired from teaching and opened the Sublett Gallery in Knoxville. Sublett won numerous awards for his paintings and was a member of the National Academy of Design. His works are in the collections of the National Academy of Design, The Tennessee State Museum, and Cheekwood, Nashville. In 1991, "The Unseen Carl Sublett" was the first exhibit at the new Knoxville Museum of Art. (Source: The Tennessee Arts Commission)
