The D. Tayler paintings – like many other countless thousands of paintings – are chinese factory paintings, made to look like American paintings.  They may be actual paintings but they are nonetheless formulaic and mass-produced imports. These deceptive imports then become absorbed into the stream in the USA  and then people – even reputable auction houses – start listing them, sometimes in suspect manner, as authentic American works. This practice really ruins the process of collecting for everyone.

It is interesting that some auction houses will use the phrase “signed D. It is interesting that some auction houses will use the phrase “signed D. Tayler” rather than “signed by D’ Taylor” and will refer to it as a ‘decorative work’.  Subtle signs of foul-play meant to manipulate a buyer.  Enough of these fakes have sold that people now looking at completed/sold items from auction houses are apt to think the comps are real, and are completely duped.

Note that the stars in the flags of the Chinese paintings often have the incorrect number.  You might see a painting of a ship and later come across the exact same ship, or nearly exact, but going in the opposite direction.  It is a formula factory painting.  Even the Americanized name is misspelled…Tayler.   Note also how all the auction houses spread a one-line tag about the painter D. Tayler: “ D. Tayler, circa 2005, Tayler is a well-known American marine artist, known for his pristine sailboat art”  Try to find one more actual fact!!!...there are none.  All of the paintings are placed in factory up-market frames,  and cruise lines and others often fall prey to this false sensationalist look.  It is a fraudulent activity. There is no D. Tayler, other than a group of talented but misguided Chinese painters who use the pseudonym.

If you are thinking about “D. Tayler” for the first time, use this as an educational opportunity to learn about the Chinese mass produced formulaic paintings that enter the US ports every single day.  It is eye-opening and you will never look at the paintins in the same way again.
