George Fort Gibbs

George Fort Gibbs (1870 - 1942) was active/lived in District Of Columbia, Pennsylvania.  George Gibbs is known for Illustrator, portrait, genre, mural.

From New Orleans and living for a period in Washington DC, George Fort Gibbs settled for the last fifty years of his life in the Philadelphia area. His reputation was for illustration as he became a magazine illustrator with a wide list of publications including Scribner's, Mc Clure's, Harper's, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Collier's, and The Saturday Evening Post.  He also wrote and illustrated over 35 novels, illustrated books for other authors, and wrote screen plays for films.

As a young man, he set out to have a career in the Navy but changed his mind after attending the Naval Academy for three years.  He enrolled in the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and the Art Students League in New York.  To earn tuition money and support himself, he sold real estate and worked as a newspaper reporter.

He was active in the Phildelphia Alliance, the Philadelphia Art Club and served as President of the Franklin Inn Club.
