An important Canadian Inuit carver, sculptor, draftsman and printmaker, Pauta Saila (aka: Pauta, aka: disc number* E7990) was born in Kilaparutua (Baffin Island), Northwest Territories, settled in Cape Dorset (Baffin Island) in  the early 1960s, and died in Ottawa, Ontario.  His trademark dancing bears are iconic works of Inuit art; a “Pauta bear” is considered a prized addition to any collection of Inuit art.  His work is discussed in most of the comprehensive books about Inuit art and he is the subject of articles in every edition of the Canadian Encyclopedia since the 1980s.  His works are in numerous museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the National Gallery of Canada (Ot   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 21688 characters.]  Artist bio
