Biography from Principle Gallery

Artist Statement:

"I received my formal training in the academic ateliers of Florence, Italy. Since returning to the Washington D.C. area I have been focusing on creating a new and large body of work. My new series have taken me away from academic studies to more elaborate compositions that combine human and still life elements. In addition to this I now take on portrait commissions, and continue my studies in art by observing and copying the painting of the Old Masters in art galleries throughout the world.

My work is about pleasing the eye. I paint light and the way it falls. Simple observation reveals beauty; often it is found in the unconventional. Because of this I have learned to take particular delight in unusual pairings of subject matter.  Frequently my compositions are spontaneous. When a person comes to me, they occupy a space my mind. Arrangements form from there until with excitement I see and have the idea. The design is both planned and subconscious. For this reason I surround myself with Victorian and Baroque costume, bones, and other things which I find fascinating- I want subject matter to always be at hand.

Recently I have also found myself to be quite a prolific painter.  I believe that coming from a very slow and methodical working method this new proficiency is not hard to anticipate given that we can all speed up with time.  The fact is though that I like to work a lot, and I have many ideas in my head that I want to get out so consequently this urge has become part of my working method.  In addition I have also become a little of a collector in antique dolls and curiosities.  I comb through the streets and the web for desirable props that inspire me and then I give them a home in the studio.  Eventually they all find their way into paintings.

My paintings are created with oil paint on canvas.  I am conscious of the traditional craftsmanship I have attained in Florence.  While my interest in new pigments and tools may cause minor alterations in my materials, these really remain fundamentally the same.  All my evolution is taking place on the canvas and in my head; in what I see in nature and interpret in two dimensions on the picture plan.  I have the fundamentals of design to work with when planning a painting. I make preparatory studies. I use multiple layers to build an illusion of light and form. When this illusion is convincing and to my taste, the painting is done. "

Biography from American Legacy Fine Arts

Classical Realist artist Teresa Oaxaca was born in California in 1987. She received her art training through some of today’s most relevant classical art academies and traditional artists. In 2005, Oaxaca traveled to Florence, Italy where she spent four years studying at the Angel Academy of Fine Art, followed by completing graduate courses at the Florence Academy of Art. In 2008, she received an apprenticeship with the celebrated Norwegian figurative artist Odd Nerdrum at his studio in Stavern, Norway. From 2010 to 2012, Oaxaca received additional instruction at the Art League of Alexandria, Virginia where she studied under classical artists, Robert Liberace and Paul Lucchesi. Recently, she spent four months touring European museums to study the works of the Old Masters.

Teresa Oaxaca uses her personal collection of Victorian and Baroque costumes, and masks and dolls as symbolic metaphors in her paintings as well as opportunities to expose unique characters that heighten the psychological aspect of a scene. Her provocative, yet opulently beautiful, paintings are capturing media attention in print publications as well as in video interviews. In an article published in the Spring 2016 issue of the California Art Club Newsletter, art writer Molly Siple commented that “Oaxaca’s current work offers the viewer a lush fantasy world of unusual paintings of subject matter in which human and still-life elements mix.”

Oaxaca explains, “Most art from past cultures used imagination and fantasy to interpret and explore aspects of the real world. Art, for me, exhibits my need for beauty and order by presenting it through a spiritual, sympathetic, and uncanny filter.” She adds, “My work is about pleasing the eye. I paint light and the way it falls. Simple observation reveals beauty, which I often find in the unconventional. Because of this, I have learned to take particular delight in unusual pairings of subject matter.” Oaxaca’s paintings maintain traditional craftsmanship, as she explores and utilizes new pigments, tools, and materials. Her paintings begin with preparatory sketches to address design concepts, and then, she uses multiple layers of oil paint to build an illusion of light and form.

Teresa Oaxaca currently spends her time between Florence, Italy, and Arlington, Virginia where she has her studio.
