Terry DeLapp

Terry DeLapp (Born 1934) is active/lives in California.  Terry DeLapp is known for Mod tonalist landscape.

Californian Terry DeLapp seems more interested in painting space than objects, hiding tiny farm buildings behind extensive foregrounds and under high skies. His acrylic rural landscapes are almost abstractions, realistic but with minimal detail, featuring two wide planes of earth and sky sandwiching a thin line of distant middle-ground with its miniscule barns and farmhouses.

Even a floral still-life, "Pink Flowers and Mason Jar," acrylic, 20 x 16, has the name-sake objects minimized at the bottom of the canvas, dwarfed by the amount of empty space of the ochre-umber wall behind. DeLapp's is a cautious, delicate vision.

He studied art at the University of California at Los Angeles and the Chouinard Art Institute, apparently working after graduation with an unusual combination of occupations and endeavors including painting, writing for actor-comedian Steve Martin and becoming a dealer in 19th and 20th Century American art.

Calling his painting style "neo-tonalist," DeLapp responds to the poetry of nature modified by the farmland cultivation of man, and mourns the increasing loss of it due to encroaching urbanization. He admires artists such as Inness, Whistler, J. Alden Weir and Xavier Martinez. DeLapp has exhibited at the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Known for his tonalist landscapes of the coast and valleys of central California, Terry DeLapp was born in Pasadena. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Hollywood, and at the University of California in Los Angeles.

His early painting including his small animal series was motivated by a strong commitment to the environment. In 1992, he moved to Cambria on the central coast and focused on the obvious beauty of his surroundings rather than subliminal political messages.

Biography from Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery (Artists A-H)

Terry DeLapp is a neo-tonalist painter who uses classical composition and a limited palette in his landscapes and still lifes. His current work is accessible, simple and beautiful, while his main concern remains, as always, the environment.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Originally, my art was meant as a political-philosophical motivator. I… concentrated on relaying an image that would register with the viewer as a powerful statement of my concerns about the environment…Now I concentrate on painting that [tries] to match the loveliness of its inspiration. It was, and is, telling the old story in the old way, relying on painterly achievement to best convey my concern for the land and what is on it.
