Biography from the Archives of askART

Tomás L. Golding was born in Caracas, Venezuela on August 10, 1909 and died there in 1981. He began as a private pupil of Antonio Alcántara in 1920, and was admitted at the Academia de Bellas Artes de Caracas in 1922.  On concluding his stay there in 1925, he then went on to New York City to continue his studies at the Cooper Union Academy.

During this period, Golding's painting is characterized by baroque trends and by his chromatic solutions. His work was then mainly inspired by the hillsides and the canyons of Caracas. He developed a very personal style during his forties and later with paintings reflecting plantations, environments with trees, seaside views and rustic motifs from the Tuy Valley and the Aragua coastside.

Golding earned little recognition by art institutions during his lifetime, a fact hard to explain,
considering that he was an excellent landscape painter of Venezuelan tradition. Strangely enough, he has up to the present not been recognized by a comprehensive retrospective.

Nevertheless, his work has been exhibited at individual shows in 1931 at the Art Center of New York in 1931 and the Club Central Caracas; in 1938 at the Club Venezuela in and at the MBA in 1938, 1941 and 1953.  Other exhibitions were the Ateneo de Caracas in 1944 and the Galeria Acquavella in 1966.  In 1967 a small comprehensive exhibition of his work at the MBA was shown.

Golding received the first prize in the Paintings Competition of the Ateneo de Caracas held in 1944.
