Darío Álvarez Basso was born in Venezuela in 1968.  Basso comes from a family of intellectuals and soon moved to Vigo. He studied at the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo, at the New School of visual arts in New York and at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.

After incursions into the world of rock and comics, Basso dedicated himself exclusively to painting in the mid-eighties in Madrid. His work mixes influences from painters such as Tàpies, or Spanish Baroque artists or even Goya, and some beginnings that stem from a strong relationship with abstract expressionism.

From each and every one of his trips and stays abroad, he obtains something that he reflects on and incorporates into his work.  For example, after a trip to Morocco at the end of the eighties, Basso shows interest for the social. In 1989, he carried out a job of cleaning and simplifying his Arabic symbols and began to use more forceful forms with Hindu influence.
